  • Notes
    • Mary Dabney was born to Cornelius and Susannah Dabney January 22, 1688, in the part of New Kent County, Virginia that is now Hanover County.
She married Major Thomas Carr Jr. in 1704, probably in Hanover County, since that was where her father lived. He was born in 1678 to Thomas Carr Sr. and Mary (Garland) Carr of Topping Castle in an area in New Kent County that was later included in King and Queen County, then King William County, and finally Caroline County. Thomas Jr. and Mary had four children: Thomas III, born 1705; John, born December 26, 1706; Agnes born 1712; and Sarah, born November 14, 1714.
Their farm, called Bear Castle, was located first in King William County, where Thomas was a Justice from 1714 and sheriff in 1722-23. In 1728, their area was included in newly-formed Caroline County, where he was appointed a Justice of the Peace from the formation of the county.
He purchased a large number of patents in King William, Hanover, Caroline, and Spotsylvania Counties. A total of 28 patents containing 16,646 acres were issued to a Thomas Carr between 1701 and 1738. The first patent, in 1701, went to his father, Thomas Carr Sr. and eight to Thomas Carr Jr. Most of the remainder were probably issued to Thomas Jr., but a few may have been issued to his father. So many large patents in scattered locations could not possibly be settled and cultivated by patentees, and most were probably rented or sold to immigrants, freed indentured servants, or local land owners.
      Thomas died May 29, 1737/38 aged about 59/60, and Mary died September 7, 1748. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
