  William Dabney was born to Cornelius Dabney II and his first wife (name unknown) about 1715 in New Kent County, later Hanover County, Virginia. The name of William’s wife is unclear. There was a Rachel Dabney living in Bedford County, to which William moved in about 1765, who had a daughter, Fanny, who was married to John Jackson July 19, 1790. If Fanny was 18-24 when she was married, she would have been born 1766-72. Rachel also had a son, William, who was bound out as an apprentice to Matthew Gibbs by the parish overseer of the poor in 1795. If he was 10-14 at the time, he would have been born 1781-1785. It is possible that Rachel was William’s wife and Fanny and William were his children. There were also two other Dabneys in Bedford County who may have been sons of William: Nathan, born about 1765-1770, and William born before 1775. William’s land was processioned in St. Paul’s Parish in Hanover County in 1755, 1759, and 1763 in the same precinct as his father. He was probably the William Dabney charged with 150 acres in the 1763 Quit Rent Rolls. He was also probably the William Dabney who obtained a patent for 354 acres in Bedford County in 1765. The Bedford County Order Book 3 briefly mentions a suit involving Dabney vs Shrewsbury from May, 1765 to July 1766 indicating William’s likely residence in Bedford soon after issuance of the patent. William was not listed in the Bedford County personal property tax roll in 1782, the earliest year for which records are available, indicating that he was deceased or left the county before then. His nephew, Cornelius Dabney IV, son of Cornelius Dabney III, moved from Hanover to Bedford in 1772, but did not purchase any land for the next 20 years, suggesting that he may have farmed with his uncle William at first, later on William’s land. In 1792, a year before his death, Cornelius purchased 174 acres from a William Dabney of Guilford County, North Carolina, who may have been his uncle or a son of his uncle. The metes and bounds description of the land was the same as part of the description of William’s patent. The fate of the other 180 acres in William’s patent has not been found.
