  Thomas M. Dabney was born to Samuel and Jane (Meriwether) Dabney 29 Nov 1779. On February 1, 1796, Samuel apprenticed Thomas to Benjamin Tate in Richmond, a tanner and currier of leather. On December 28, 1800, he married Elizabeth Taghtmire in Philadelphia. They had 3 children: Lewis, Samuel, and and a third whose name is unknown. A Thomas Dabney was working in Philadelphia as a carver in 1802. He probably moved to Pittsburgh because his wife, Elizabeth, was living there in 1839. Thomas died before November, 1812, when Charles Dabney Jr., the executor of Samuel’s estate sent $100 to Thomas’s widow by his brother George. Elizabeth was living in Pennsylvania in July, 1836, when a chancery suit was filed in Louisa County court by Charles W. Dabney and his mother Elizabeth against a number of other heirs of Samuel Dabney. Elizabeth was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when she was listed in Harris’s Pittsburgh directory for 1839. 26 Jan 1797, (a second record of apprenticeship in court order bk 3)Samuel apprenticed Thomas to Benjamin Tate, occupation not given in court record. (new notes, p. 10, 47.) Thomas was deceased by 16 Nov 1812 when the executor of Samuel’s estate sent $100 to his widow by his brother George Dabney, who was evidently alive then. (Louisa County chancery case 3, 1837, p. 17). From the same documents, it is clear that Lewis was one of three children, two of which were probably under age in 1837. Other pages mentioned a second son, Samuel. Elizabeth was living in Pennsylvania in July, 1836, according to chancery suit p. 162. She was not the Elizabeth Dabney living in Louisa Co. in 1850, 65, $4,500, b. VA; with Francis Dabney Sr., 68, no occup., prob. land owner; Francis Dabney, 26, ass’t farmer, b. VA; Bettie, 22, b. VA. 1860 census Louisa Co., Elizabeth Dabney, 74, $8,000/$29,620, b. VA; Bettie, 30, 0/$1,500, b. VA; George F., 35, farmer, 0/$12,150; Louisa (prob. Geo.’s wf), 31; 4 ch. 1-7.
