  • Notes
    • John Syme III was born to John Syme Jr. and Mildred Thornton (Meriwether) Syme in 1755 in Hanover County, Virginia.
He married Sally Overton in May, 1779. She was a daughter of William Overton III and Jemima (Harris) Overton. They had two children: John, born 1799, died 1824; Mildred Meriwether, born January 16, 1782, married Dr. William Cochrane September 13, 1798, later migrated to Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, where Mildred died May 16/17, 1843, at Louisville.
John served as a captain in the Revolution for about a year, commissioned December 3, 1776, and resigned January 3, 1778. His records in the land and personal property tax lists are sparse and somewhat unclear. Toward the end of his life, he was worried about his large debts according to his brother Nicholas, who acted as his agent in business affairs, which suggests that John was in declining health during the years before his death February 10, 1793 in Amherst County, aged about 38. His wife was still living in 1810, when she was listed in the land tax rolls, and died before 1811, when her entry changed to Sarah Syme’s estate. [2, 3, 4]
