  • Notes
    • Sarah “Sallie” Elizabeth Winston was born to Peter and Elizabeth (Povall) Winston May 25,1778, in Henrico County, Virginia.
She married first to Samuel Toler/Toller November 29, 1793. After his early death, she remarried to John Mosby (1767-1843) with whom she had one child, George Mosby. John Mosby was born about 1767 to Benjamin M. and Elizabeth (Cornett) Mosby. John was a business man in Richmond who offered in a newspaper notice in 1804 that he would pay $500 to anyone who could prove the attacks on his character that some persons were spreading. He was appointed a state inspector at the Shockoe Tobacco Warehouse about the same time or earlier and held the position with partners William Young until 1833 and then Benjamin Sheppard until his death April 15, 1843. After their son George’s birth, Sarah died and John remarried to Ellizabeth Jones who died after a few years and John remarried a second time to Mrs. Eliza Taliaferro June 2, 1830. John died April 15, 1843, aged 76, and an obituary was published April 25, 1843 in the Richmond Whig. An advertisement was published September 5, 1843 for the sale of John Mosby’s mansion house tract of 232 acres, 226 additional acres, and all farm stock. [3, 4]
