Notes |
- Isaac Winston Dabney was born to Cornelius and Elizabeth Smith (Winston) Dabney July 11, 1787, in Louisa County, Virginia.
He married Hannah Temple MIller July 21, 1808. They had five children: Eliza, born about 1809, married Henry Hughes; Catherine, born 1810/11, married Albert G. Meriwether; Dorothy Ann, born 1813/14, married Thomas Meriwether, born 1807/08; Hannah Gwathmey, born September 3, 1816, died July 2, 1895, married first cousin Edwin Winston Dabney, born September 28, 1821, died September 27, 1896; Martha Winston, born 1818, married Henry Hughes. Hannah died, and Isaac remarried to Sarah Chew June 15,1819. They had several children who died before adulthood. Sarah died, and Isaac married third to Charlotte W. Wasson, a widow, August 27, 1829. They had three children: Urith, born in January, 1831, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, died after the 1900 census, married Basil H. Crapster November 26, 1850, in Shelby County, Kentucky; Isaac Winston, born 1832, died February 25, 1878, married Nannie N. (___) about 1855; Albert H., born 1833, married Maggie (Margaret) Magher, born 1838, 11 May 1865 at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, died between 1870 and 1880 censuses.
Isaac probably moved to Jefferson County about 1809 or 1810. During the War of 1812, he was appointed a captain in the 33rd Regiment of the Kentucky Militia September 9, 1814. He was first listed in the county tax rolls in 1811 without land, but with five slaves and one horse. His last appearance in the tax lists was in 1830, when he was charged with 15 slaves, no horses, and a tavern license. He was never charged with land in the county tax lists, so was probably not a farmer. His sons, Isaac Winston and Albert H. were a carpenter and a blacksmith, which suggests that their father may have had a skilled trade. In the 1820 census, he was living in Middletown, Jefferson County, Kentucky, with one male 0-9, four females 0-9, a female 10-15, and Sarah, aged 26-44. In the 1830 census for Jefferson County, he was 40-49 and Charlotte was 20-29 and they were living with 5 children and 9 adults, probably roomers in his tavern. Living next door was Dr. Richard Chew, 50-60, probably a relative of Sarah Chew Dabney.
Isaac died in 1833, when administrators were appointed for his estate. [1, 2, 4, 5, 6]
